Located in the heart of South Central Florida, Avon Park is
known as "The City of Charm." The many lakes
and orderly rows of citrus groves add to the attractiveness of the town.
Located along US Highway 27 at State Road 64, Avon Park is eighty
miles south of Disney World, and so isolated from the frantic pace of the
vacation attractions. Centered between the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, Avon Park
enjoys a solid economy based on citrus and light manufacturing.
Avon Park was named poetically by English settlers who came to the area
after the end of the Seminole wars. They compared the area with the home of
William Shakespere along the Avon River, and invited other English settlers to
join them in the Sunshine State.
Although its early rapid growth was halted
by the end of the Florida land boom, many reminders of those heady days remain
to charm modern visitors, including the venerable majesty of the Jacaranda Hotel,
and the neatly painted bandstand on the towns' tree-lined 'mall.'
Today the town is a popular wintering spot for northern visitors, who enjoy the
crisp winter weather, away from the grip of ice and snow.
